Accommodation on the Costa Brava along the GR 92

Stage hiking on the Costa Brava is above all captivating because of the great landscape, the constant view of the blue sea, the (bathing) breaks in picturesque bays and the opportunity to stop for a bite to eat in picturesque village centres. But who doesn't dream of a hot shower and a freshly made bed at the end of an exhausting day of hiking?

The Costa Brava also has a lot to offer in this respect: The range of accommodation is as large and varied as on hardly any other long-distance hiking trail. On the one hand, there are the many family-run guesthouses and bed & breakfasts ("hostal"), small boutique hotels in historic buildings and castles converted into hotels, and on the other hand, the beach hotels and bed castles on the coast.

We recommend not to orientate yourself too much on star categories when booking accommodation. A small but charming and individually run 1-star hotel can be more worthwhile (and also more expensive) than the faceless 3-star hotel right next door.

We have compiled some hotel recommendations here on our website and also prepared a practical overview table for travel planning: To the planning table.

Arrival: Accommodation in Barcelona

Overnight stay in Barcelona (on arrival)

If you don't land in Barcelona until the afternoon, you definitely need to plan an overnight stay before the first day of walking.  We recommend the Pension Ecozentric in Barcelona for this purpose.. This recently modernised guesthouse is very centrally located and very close to the train station towards Portbou.

The hotel and accommodation offer in Barcelona is quite expensive all year round, the Pension Ecozentric offers a very good price-performance ratio in our view.

The rooms at Ecozentric are elegantly furnished and combine the historic Art Nouveau architecture with many modern elements.

Stage 1: Overnight stay in Llança

There is a wide range of accommodation in Llança, of which we can recommend the following, among others:

The 3-star hotel "Grifeu" impresses above all with its location directly by the sea.  From the street side, the hotel is rather inconspicuous, but a real highlight is the terrace facing the sea. Since the hotel is also directly on the GR-92, you are spared a diversion.

The 2-star Hotel Carbonell, on the other hand, is located in the historic centre of Llança. . This means an additional 20 min walk inland, but the diversions is worth it: Llança has a beautiful medieval centre and is very lively in the evenings thanks to numerous bars and restaurants.

The historic centre of Llança has an imposing tower.

Small but clean rooms at the Hotel Carbonell

The Hotel Carbonell has a roof terrace and is located in the historic centre of Llanca, a bit inland

Stage 2: Overnight stay in Cadaqués

Cadaqués is a very popular destination and attracts many weekenders from nearby Barcelona. The choice of accommodation is correspondingly large, but the prices are also higher than in other places on the Costa Brava. We can recommend the following hotels or guesthouses ("Hostal" or "Hostalet"):

Among the more budget options is L'Hostalet de Cadaqués in a small side street . The small guesthouse is very well maintained, the prices are relatively reasonable and the rooms are very, very small. Nevertheless, good air conditioning ensures a good night's sleep.

Several accommodations are located on the square opening onto the main beach,  of which the Hotel La Residencia is the most striking : Behind the prestigious façade, guests can expect an interior inspired by the artistic work of Salvador Dalí. In the immediate vicinity are other, somewhat cheaper guesthouses, such as Hostal Marina Cadaqués..

L'Hostalet de Cadaques: Very, very small rooms but neat and cheap. You wouldn't believe it: the metal struts serve as stairs to the 3rd bed above the bathroom!

Stage 3: Overnight stay in Roses or Empuriabrava

Stay overnight in Empuriabrava

For stage 3, there are two different places to stay: On the one hand, the harbour town of Roses with 20,000 inhabitants and up to 100,000 overnight guests in the high season, and on the other hand, the retort town of Empuriabrava, which is criss-crossed by artificial canals and completely geared towards tourism, which is also the starting point for our stage 4.

No matter what you decide in the end, both places are clearly lacking in charm compared to Cadaqués (the finish of stage 2).

In Empuriabrava, we can recommend the 3-star aparthotel Xon's Platja due to its low prices . Although this is a bed castle visible from afar, its location on the southern edge of Empuriabrava is ideal for the start of the following stage 4. In addition, hikers probably appreciate the presence of a large balcony - it offers a good opportunity to dry the wet hiking clothes.

Somewhat nicer but considerably more expensive is the 4-star Hotel Port Salins, also in Empuriabrava..

Stay overnight in Roses

In Roses, the 3-star Hotel Prestige Mar y Sol, among others, is recommendableHere, the hotel's location directly on the beach is particularly impressive.
